Dogs to follow

Form expert Dale Code has picked out a selection of greyhounds to follow from around Victoria. You may even want to add them to your Blackbook account.

MEPUNGA WARRIOR
Breeding:
Mar ’19 Fernando Bale x Mepunga Rosie
Trainer: Jeff Britton, Mount Anakie
Record: 47 starts 14-12-7

Dale says:
“Established elite middle-distance performer who was desperately unlucky not to win when runner-up in the recent Group 1 Hume Cup final over 600m at The Meadows. Made his distance debut with an impressive all-the-way win at Sandown Park last Thursday night in a smart 41.98sec on a slow track. His time that night was just under two lengths faster than the Free For All, which saw Group 1 winners Knicks Bale and Gypsy Wyong fill the quinella. With a few of the nation’s best stayers not having ideal preparations leading into the up-and-coming Group 1 Bold Trease – heats to be run this Friday night at Sandown Park – Mepunga Warrior may just have timed his run perfectly to make a late assault on one of the most prestigious staying events on the calendar.”

Best traits:
Fierce chaser; can lead or come off the speed to win
Ideal draw: Box 1
Ideal distance: 650m

JUNGLE PANTHER
Breeding: Mar ‘20 Barcia Bale x Up Hill Jill
Trainer: Jeffrey Geall, Fyansford
Record: 2 starts 1-0-1

Dale says:
“Impeccably bred type who has had just the two starts, competing in a heat and final at Sandown Park. His heat run when placed on debut was solid enough, but the improvement in his brilliant 29.64sec win in the final had a little bit of Shima Shine about it. Not suggesting he can reach the lofty heights of Shima Shine, but the speed he shows soon after box rise is impressive. He is a big, rangy type and once he gets balanced and hits full speed, he really has a big motor. Still learning, and with more improvement expected, Jungle Panther is certainly one to keep an eye out for.”

Best traits:
Explosive speed soon after box rise, can sustain high speed
Ideal draw:
Box 8 – particularly on a provincial circuit
Ideal distance:
500m

BUSTER HARLEY
Breeding:
Mar ’20 Unlawful Entry x Miss Morrisset
Trainer: David Geall, Lara
Record: 3 starts 0-1-0

Dale says:
“Has had just the three runs and going over his replays he clearly is on the improve and looking for more distance. In his last start placing over 525m at The Meadows, Buster Harley showed better track sense than his previous two runs, and his run home sectional was outstanding. Although he does lack early speed, a rise in distance looks imminent and should suit. At just 20 months of age and still learning, the future looks bright.”

Best traits:
Strong run home sectionals
Ideal draw:
Inside box
Ideal distance: 600m and beyond

“Although Buster Harley does lack early speed, a rise in distance looks imminent and should suit.”
