Racing set to return to Cranbourne

Greyhound racing will return to Cranbourne on Wednesday, 25 November 2026, following a major redevelopment that has delivered a modern, purpose-built racing venue for Victoria’s largest greyhound training region.

Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines and Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards today visited the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club to announce the return of racing on the redeveloped track, made possible through a partnership between the Victorian Government, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and the club.

The $9.5 million project has transformed the venue, with a strong focus on greyhound welfare and participant safety. Key upgrades include a larger one-turn track, a widened racing surface, improved lighting and drainage, fixed starts and new greyhound welfare facilities.

The redeveloped track features racing distances of 331m, 420m, 470m and provision for a future 655m.

GRV Chair Tom Salom said the reopening was a significant milestone for the local greyhound community.

“Today is a proud day for everyone connected with Cranbourne greyhound racing,” Salom said.

“More Victorian greyhound trainers are located closer to this venue than any other track in the state. Bringing racing back to Cranbourne will provide greater convenience and opportunity for participants, while reinforcing our commitment to welfare and safety.”

The return of racing is particularly important for the Cranbourne region, which is home to around 200 greyhound trainers, the largest concentration in Victoria.

Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines said the redevelopment would deliver lasting benefits for participants, greyhounds and the industry.

“This upgrade will provide a safe and state-of-the-art venue for trainers, greyhounds and participants,” Minister Carbines said.

“The racing industry plays a vital role in the state’s economy, and our investment will back more jobs.”

Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards said the project was a major win for the local community.

“This is a fantastic result for the racing community in Cranbourne,” Ms Richards said.

“Backing the upgrade will boost our local economy, bringing together racing enthusiasts, friends and families for a great night out.”

After almost five years without a home track, local participants will once again be able to race and train at Cranbourne, with the redeveloped facility set to play an important role in the future of greyhound racing in Victoria.
