Sandown hosted a ‘footy finals’ themed Great Chase this year, with 120 participants turning out in footy colours to cheer home their greyhounds on the track, but – unlike the AFL finals – this day was all about the dogs.

Celeste, from the Wallara (Close Avenue) team, was excited for the chance to attend the Great Chase again. “It’s the great day out, a fantastic atmosphere and the dogs, the clients love the dogs.

They get treated by kings and queens and feel so comfortable in the welcoming atmosphere provided by GRV.” With their $100 winnings the Close Avenue gang will be putting in for a new BBQ and will also be attending the Great Chase Grand Final at the Meadows in October for the first time, with a view to increasing the BBQ budget.

Blairlogie finished top of the ladder on the day, with first prize of $600. Tracey and Jackson from the group said it all; “Woohoo! Excited! We will put the money back into more social outings for the guys and making sure we have more fun.” Blairlogie was certainly blessed with some form knowledge. Tracey admitted “I used to box and catch the dogs. My dad was a trainer. But it didn’t really help, the dog ran beautifully.”

Greg Miller, CEO of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, explained what The Great Chase means to Sandown. “It’s a fantastic initiative by GRV and I love the look on everyone’s faces across the day. “It’s the greatest community involvement initiative that GRV does, at a great time of year.”

Still to come in the Great Chase series; Warrnambool on October 3, Healesville October 11, Meadows October 16 and the Grand Final, also at The Meadows, on October 23.
