Joey The Jet returns in Healesville Emerald heats

Joey The Jet will make his long-awaited return to racing at Healesville on Monday, ending more than eight months on the sidelines when he contests the heats of the Sportsbet Emerald.

And the 2024 Melbourne Cup placegetter will return with a new name in the trainer column.

Josh Formosa purchased Joey The Jet, with the talented sprinter set to have his first start for the Formosa kennel in heat eight of the Emerald.

“He has spent a lot of time resting after having some chips removed from his wrist,” Formosa said.

“He’s been working well, so I couldn’t help myself and gave him a trial – and he went super.”

Joey The Jet will jump from box seven in the four-dog heat, where he faces a significant first-up test against talented straight tracker Smart As You from box three.

“We drew against the wrong dog – he will probably have our measure on Monday,” Formosa said.

The Emerald features eight four-dog heats, but qualification comes with a twist.

Rather than the traditional heat winners progressing, the eight fastest greyhounds across the heats will advance to the $25,000 feature event.

Formosa also has Upended engaged in heat six, where she will jump from box one.

“I think Upended is a really good chance,” Formosa said.

“But to put his trial into perspective, he went quicker than her.”

The first of eight Emerald heats gets underway at Healesville at 11.57am on Monday.
