Gypsy Wyong ‘zooms’ to third G1 win

‘Roaming’ super stayer Gypsy Wyong snared her third Group 1 win when successful in tonight’s TAB Zoom Top (725m) at The Meadows.

Prepared at Anakie by Andrea Dailly, Gypsy Wyong landed a $75,000 first prize and redeemed Victoria’s leading trainer’s second placing in the event with Dyna Kayla in 2014 and third placings with Sunset Bourbski last year and Shimaguni in 2012.

Gypsy Wyong (Jul ’19 Westmead Hawk x Dyna Gypsy) had previously won the G1 Bold Trease and G1 Topgun Stayers. She was also third in the G1 Hume Cup and won the G3 Top Cat Video Cup.

And she’s the eighth female greyhound to win the Zoom Top in the event’s 20-year history.

Gypsy Wyong (Box 7), which had mixed success in Brisbane leading into the event, ‘stalked’ early leader Untapped (Box 8) before unleashing a powerful finishing burst.

Starting at the amazing odds of $9.30 for a stayer of her calibre, Gypsy Wyong defeated NSW star Line Of Quality ($13.00), which flew home for second, by 0.4 lengths, with Untapped ($6.60) a further 1.75 lengths away third in 42.54sec.

It was her 17th win from 36 starts and she’s now three from five over 725m at The Meadows. Her stakes catapulted to $380,765.

‘Team Dailly’ spokesperson George Dailly said Gypsy Wyong had been “more than competitive” in G1 races.

“She’s a very good chaser and always puts herself in the race. We’re very happy with her.

“Not one of the tipsters put her in the first three and I thought, ‘she’s got to be half a chance’.”

Dailly added that Gypsy Wyong was the “most beautiful greyhound you could ever meet”.

Her dam, Dyna Gypsy, only started four times for one win (Sandown Park – 29.64sec) and two seconds.

She broke a hock at The Meadows,” Dailly said. “We were devastated as she showed heaps of potential.”

Pawnote: In a memorable Night One of the ‘Australian Cup Carnival’ Andrea Dailly trained ‘half the card’.
