Do It going for Brisbane ‘Gold’

Victorian ‘road warrior’ Do It will line up in his fourth interstate Group 1 event in tonight’s Gold Bullion final (520m) at Albion Park in Brisbane.

Trained by Jeff Britton, Do It won the Adelaide Cup, ran second in the Hobart Thousand and finished seventh in the Paws Of Thunder in Sydney, while he was third in the Topgun at his only G1 appearance to date in his home state.

Do It started $3.30 favourite in his Gold Bullion heat last Thursday and produced a herculean effort to overcome Box 8 and a slow start in a fast-finishing 30.07 victory, with NSW star Zipping Kyrgios’ 29.68sec the fastest qualifying performance.

Drawn in Box 6 for the $200,000 to-the-winner final, Do It is a $13 chance to become the third straight Victorian sprinter to win the Gold Bullion since it was renamed and moved to summer.

Sennachie, trained by Steve White, was victorious in 2020, followed by Andrea Dailly’s Shima Shine last year.

“He did well in his heat,” Britton said.

“He’s probably used to running against top class dogs all the time now. You don’t travel away with them if you don’t think they’re good enough but it could be a different story in the final.

“He had to work for it last week and he’s going to have to work for it again tonight if he’s going to win it. He’s going to need a bit of luck.

“You hope he’s getting smarter as he gets older. He used his head and got into a possie down the back in his heat and he’ll need to do something similar again.

“He didn’t run any time in his heat but if he’d had a clear run I think he would’ve got down to around 29.80sec.”

Britton will also be represented in the $100,000 to-the-winner G3 Gold Cup final (710m), with Hank The Hustler one of three Victorian-trained finalists.

The trio is popular in TAB’s market on the distance feature, with Hank The Hustler (Box 5) and Andrea Dailly’s dual G1 winner Gypsy Wyong (Box 7) sharing the second line of betting at $4.80, behind Samantha Grenfell’s $4.20 favourite Knicks Bale (Box 3).

Hank The Hustler and Knicks Bale won their heats in 42.08sec and 42.18sec respectively, while Gypsy Wyong ran second in her qualifier.

“I think Hank The Hustler probably has a better chance than Do It,” Britton said.
