Feature racing heads to the Yarra Valley today with four heats of the Healesville Derby (350m) and two heats of the Healesville Oaks (350m), with the respective finals to take place in a week’s time.

Gunai Rebel (Won 11 from 21) takes on Real Reward (29.43sec at Sandown) in the opening Oaks heat (Race 5 at 12.29pm), while the Derby heats boast several big names including former Shepparton track record holder Paddy’s Marvel, Blackpool Flash (19 from 38) and Incendio (6 from 10), while later on the card the brilliant Rilynn Bale (26 from 53) will be in action.

A great match-up looms in Race 8 at Sale tonight at 5.04pm with highly-rated local Massimo (9 from 19) up against Chop Scotch (11 from 20).

The Watchdog says ? : PADDY’S MARVEL (1) comes into this having won a staggering 13 of 20 starts and a track record performance to his name. He finds himself in one of the weaker heats today and, from the inside draw, there should be no excuses. With ERIC GARFIELD (2) expected to move wide soon after box rise, he should pounce on the lead and a sub 19 seconds run may be on the cards. SPRING BJORN (4) has been impressive since moving to Victoria and he looks the obvious danger. He was never headed here last week, and he would have derived a lot of benefit from that run. THROW CAUTION (8) is the interesting runner. He has always shown enormous potential, however he appears to be a couple of lengths off his best at present and place claims look best today. ‘Paddy’ should get the job done today be a force to be reckoned with in next week’s final.

The Watchdog says ? : MAN ABSCONDED (2) will appreciate the smaller line-up and a top two finish looks likely. PADDY’S MARVEL (1) is a jet and should be leading throughout from the inside draw. OSPREY ROSE (1) is not in our top three selections as I believe there are stronger winning prospects, however she showed good early speed last week and may be able to hold the lead at the first bend at Sandown today. If she holds the lead, she may be picked off late but a top three finish looks likely. CURFEW (1) has great pace soon after box rise, and he should be in the top two for most of the trip.
