Middle-distance magic

The underrated Mepunga Felix appears poised to bounce back to his best form in tonight’s $17,000 Grade 5 Final (600m) at The Meadows after running third in his heat last week.

Three qualifiers were conducted last Saturday with Weblec Ace (34.23sec), Abelero Bale (34.26sec) & Fernando Frank (34.77sec) all victorious. READ MORE

MUST WATCH RACE: TAB Venue Mode Grade 5 Final

MEPUNGA FELIX ? ABELERO BALE ? FERNANDO FRANK ? WEBLEC ACE

? Meadows ? Race 6 ? 600m 8:24pm

The Watchdog says ? : Great race and there appear to be several winning chances. MEPUNGA FELIX (2) gets the nod from me. He has not experienced a lot of luck in recent months, however he comes up with a favourable rails draw tonight and he should be able to settle in a prominent spot. He is a Group 1 finalist, and he can show everyone tonight that he is still up to this level. ABELERO BALE (3) has always been a big talent and he was dominant in his blistering 34.26sec heat win last week. He can be a little hit or miss early but, with an ounce of luck, he can make his presence felt. WEBLEC ACE (8) is the ultimate professional and he is always a chance regardless of the box draw. His wide draw may not suit on the bend start, but if he can be in the top three as they go past the post the first time he can make his presence felt. FERNANDO FRANK (5) has been enormous since resuming and he must be respected, whilst the in-form ONE NIGHT ONLY (7) would have been a leading contender had he drawn closer to the rail.

The Watchdog says ? : GYPSY WYONG (1) has been huge in her first two runs and she should settle in the top three early and prove too strong. Race 3 is an open affair, so we are going to bundle up our top four selections – among them we have three runners expected to be on the pace and one run on type. Race 4 is another open race and I think two of the more fancied runners are well under the odds, so we have taken five selections at the value.

Multi price: $3.61

? $3 Place – MEPUNGA FELIX
? The Meadows ? Race 6 ? Box 2 ? 600m ⏱ 8:24pm              ***Must Watch Race***
TAB fixed odds: $2 Place
Form
?  https://watchdog.grv.org.au/meeting/565711073/race/6

The Watchdog says ? : He is a little underrated at times, but he is a Group 1 finalist and from a favourable draw he gets every chance to make a big impact. He can show genuine early pace over this journey and he should be able to find the rail soon after box rise and that will see him settle in the first half of the field. With the ability to carve out time when leading or coming from off the pace, he should be able to finish in the top three.

? $2.50 Win – MR. FIX IT
? The Meadows ? Race 7 ? Box 2 ? 525m ⏱ 8:45pm
TAB fixed odds: $3.60 Win
Form
?  https://watchdog.grv.org.au/meeting/565711073/race/7

The Watchdog says ? : This bloke is far better than his past four runs suggest and, with two vacant draws on his outside, he will get every chance to show his dynamic early speed. There is very little early pace in this event, so I expect him to pounce on the lead and with the ability to run around the 29.80sec mark, they will have some trouble reeling him in.

? $2.50 Win – CHART TOPPER
? The Meadows ? Race 9 ? Box 2 ? 525m ⏱ 9:27pm
TAB fixed odds: $2.30 Win
Form
?  https://watchdog.grv.org.au/meeting/565711073/race/9

The Watchdog says ? : She returned to racing with a dazzling 29.94sec win here and with the ‘red’ expected to set a cracking pace, she should get a nice sit throughout and prove too strong in the run home.
