Gr8 Eight: Top Detective

It’s quite elementary… You don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to work out True Detective is Australia’s most versatile greyhound.

Once again, he laid down the law to his rivals – this time in a star-studded Gr8 Eight (725m) at The Meadows.

Trained by Jeff Britton, True Detective (Box 7) was prominent throughout before pulling away for a comfortable win.

A perennial Group 1 performer, True Detective ($3.40) defeated Sandown 715m track record holder Here’s Tears ($6.50) by 2.3L, with staying revelation He Shall Power ($2.40F) a further 1.9L away third in 42.79sec.

True Detective (Aug ’17 Black Magic Opal x Little Grey) avenged his narrow defeat to Here’s Tears in the G1 Fanta Bale Super Stayers (725m) at The Meadows in late February.

A four-time G1 finalist – including victory in last year’s Hume Cup (600m) at The Meadows – True Detective notched his 23rd win from 42 starts.

It was also his third win from six starts over 725m at The Meadows. And courtesy of a $10,500 first prize, his stakes jumped to $357,765.

True Detective won the G2 Summer Distance Plate (720m) at Wentworth Park in January and late last month was runner-up to Bronski Beat in the G1 Sandown Cup (715m).

Pawnote: Previous winners of the $15,000 Special Events spread across Victoria’s two metropolitan tracks and run over a variety of distances are: Mister Harlewood (Sandown, May 7 – 715m), Rockstar Beav (Sandown, May 14 – 595m), Simon Told Helen (Sandown, May 28 – 515m), Weblec Haze (The Meadows, May 30 – 600m), Last Hurrah (Sandown, June 4 – 595m), Simon Told Helen (The Meadows, June 6 – 525m), Blazing Cartier (Sandown 715m – June 11) and Simon Told Helen (The Meadows – June 13).
