Thoroughly Modern ‘Milli’

Maffra tyro Here Comes Milli has fast become one of the state’s premier modern-day female speedsters.

Trained by Des Douch, Here Comes Milli appears to have the competitive edge over her Group 2 Laurels Classic rivals following an exciting – and sensational – four heats (515m) at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

Engaged in Heat 2 and exiting from Box 4, Here Comes Milli ($1.70F) set the time standard with an effortless all-the-way win. She scored by 6.7L over Aunt Virginia ($3.90) in 29.38sec.

It was her ninth win from 18 starts, including five of her past eight, and she’s now five from eight over 515m at Sandown Park.

Here Comes Milli – a G3 Cup Night Sprint finalist at SP – has again drawn the ‘blue alley’ for next week’s $55,000 to-the-winner final.

Meanwhile, Heat 1 was taken out by Isle Of Rose ($1.40F) – Wow She’s Fast’s kennelmate – in 29.57sec and Heat 4 by Granny Roses ($10.80) in 29.71sec.

Isle Of Rose – trained by Jackie Greenough – notched her 10th win from 13 starts (including five of her past six), while Granny Roses – prepared by Sharon-Lee Chignell – made it eight from 32. She was a Listed Pink Diamond Maiden Short Course finalist in mid-June.

Unfortunately, Heat 3 was declared a ‘No Race’.

Stewards reported: “Common Step was severely checked soon after the start and was unable to complete the course. Due to Common Step being unsecured in the home straight, and in the interest of safety for all runners, participants and staff, the decision was made to allow the remaining greyhounds to catch the lure on the turn out of the back straight.”
