Greyhound track maintenance workers now have a defined career path in the industry through an accredited training program for new and existing workers with Greyhound Racing Victoria.
Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), in partnership with Greyhound Clubs Victoria (GCV) and the Racing Education Centre (REC #22215), proudly announces the introduction of the RGR30419 – Certificate III in Racing Services (Track Maintenance) training program.
This initiative is a first for Australian greyhound racing, designed to elevate track maintenance practices and enhance animal welfare outcomes across the sport, while attracting and skilling the next generation of track staff and recognising the expertise of current track professionals.
Commencing in December 2023, GRV successfully launched the pilot Track Maintenance Training program with four trainees, mentored by experienced supervisors and supported by greyhound racing clubs across Ballarat, Sandown, Shepparton and Warrnambool. GRV is excited to continue the success of the program and extend the opportunity to existing track team members in Victoria and interstate jurisdictions.
Setting New Standards in Racing
The Track Maintenance Training Program is tailored to address the unique demands of sand-based-racing track maintenance. Through developing a specialised training curriculum, GRV is leading the way in the greyhound racing community, ensuring that track maintenance staff are equipped with the latest skills, knowledge and opportunities to share their expertise. This program represents an ongoing commitment to animal welfare and the further professionalisation of greyhound racing.
The pilot group of trainees were thoughtfully selected from diverse backgrounds, encompassing experiences in the greyhound and equine industries, landscaping, and direct to the program following secondary education.
Overcoming Industry Challenges
In 2021, GRV undertook a review of the track maintenance profession in a commitment to support and upskill track staff. Borne out of the review the training program was conceived, two years in the making. GRV and its partners meticulously crafted a contextualised suite of 18 tailored units over the period, with the course being re-added to the funded course list with Skills Victoria.
Collaboration and Expansion
There has been welcomed support and interest nationally in the program, with a number of state and territory greyhound racing authorities stepping up to participate in the next Track Manager course anticipated to commence in June 2024.
This marks the beginning of a new chapter in greyhound racing industry training. GRV, together with its partners, is committed to the continuous improvement and expansion of the program, ensuring the Australian racing industry remains a leader in welfare and innovation.
A word from our leadership
“The Track Maintenance Training Program is not just a milestone for GRV but a step for the entire greyhound racing industry,” said Jacquetta Griggs, GM Finance & Infrastructure at GRV.
“By addressing the critical need for specialised training, we’re not only elevating the standards of our tracks but also acknowledging the invaluable contributions of our maintenance teams. This program is a testament to what we can achieve through vision, collaboration, and dedication.”
