Brilliant Bareki

It’s been a whirlwind – and record-breaking – weekend for Golden Square trainer Dallas Massina.

In the final race on G2 Ballarat Cup night, Bareki (Mar ’18 Barcia Bale x Nallak) set a new 390-metre track record, clocking a sizzling 21.61sec. She shaved a half-length off the previous mark established by Arizona Dozer in January 2013.

Contesting a Grade Five, Bareki ($1.40F) rocketed out of box two to defeat Love Heart ($7.20) by nine lengths. An emerging talent, Bareki notched her seventh win, with three seconds, from 10 starts.

Pawnote: Bareki’s dam, Nallak, won eight races from 21 starts – including six at Bendigo over 425m, all in sub-24 seconds. Nallak has a second litter (3 dogs, 8 bitches), by Raw Ability, which are six months old.

Amazingly, she was having her first start since defeating Bring Your Banjo in the Healesville Oaks on May 31. Prior to that she finished to second to Catch The Thief in a Restricted Win final at Shepparton.

“Following her Oaks win, she pulled up with swelling in her right hock after a trial at Bendigo,” Massina said. “I gave her a couple of weeks off, but then I detected some filling in the hock after exercising her behind a quad bike.”

Patience is a virtue and Massina gave Bareki plenty of time to recover and it’s paid dividends.

“She was never lame on it,” she said. “But she’s pulled up a bit flat after her record-breaking run, so I’ll give her two weeks off racing and assess from there.”

Earlier on the program, Bareki’s litter brother Nangkari led all the way from box three to register a slick 21.75sec win. Thus, providing Massina with a training double.

Nangkari ($2.00F) accounted for Seen Better ($6.70) by nine lengths. It was his second win from four starts.

And yesterday at Healesville, Massina scored with Ramornie – a litter brother of Bareki and Nangkari – while her father, Noel, saluted with kennel star Bound To Succeed.
