Pearcedale trainer Glenn Rounds is heading west today with four contenders in this afternoon’s Group 2 TAB Warrnambool Cup heats (450m), the names of which all begin with the letter ‘A’.
Rounds rates Aeroplane Eric (pictured) as his best chance to make it through to next Wednesday’s Warrnambool Cup final, although he is wary of Group 1 winning-superstar Simon Told Helen, who is drawn in Box 1 in the same race.
“Aeroplane Eric is probably the pick of my four dogs on ability. He went 24.90sec at Ballarat last week so he’s a very good animal and we’ll just see what happens,” Rounds told Mick Floyd.
“He hasn’t been to Warrnambool before but he’s the sort of dog that can handle that because he’s a good chasing dog.”
Aeroplane Eric is rated at $5.00 in Heat 5, at 4.44pm, behind Simon Told Helen at $1.80Fav.
Today’s heats kick off at 3.22pm, with the six winners and two fastest 2nd placegetters to qualify for the $45,000 final.
Rounds’ talented youngster Aston Stealth, a winner of four of his nine starts, returns from a two-month layoff and has come up with box one in the second heat at 3.42pm where he is the $2.80 favourite.
“He’s trialling very well and he just needs to get a race under his belt. The red (box) is going to help him and he trialled very well at Warrnambool,” Rounds said.
Rounds went on to say that Aston Peroni was well drawn but may struggle against a quality field today, while Amarillo Highway, drawn in box eight, is better suited to an inside draw.
