Stars in ‘sensational showdown’

It promises to be a sensational showdown when two of Victorian greyhound racing’s rising stars, Aston Dynamo and Zipping Walter, ‘lock horns’ at Ballarat on Wednesday night.

Both speedsters boast a similar wins’ record and are in red-hot form.

Trained at Parwan by Paul Abela, Aston Dynamo has won seven races from 10 starts (70% strike rate). He has also won his past six starts – all in best-of-day times.

Meanwhile, Zipping Walter – trained by Lisa Delbridge at Balliang – has won eight races from 11 starts (73% strike rate). He has also won his past seven starts – three of these in best-of-day times.

But who will earn ‘bragging rights’? Well, even expert form analyst The Watchdog is in a quandary. Their assessment reveals there is nothing between the duo, quoting Aston Dynamo (Box 5) a $2.40 favourite and Zipping Walter (Box 6) a $3.00 second elect.

“I’m happy I’ve drawn inside him (Zipping Walter). He’ll have to go around me to win,” Aston Dynamo’s trainer, Paul Abela, said. “And if he gets left alone in the first 10 metres, the box draw won’t be a problem.”

Abela added Aston Dynamo had “pulled up super” after his impressive win at Healesville last Sunday.

“He’s a 35kg dog with ‘short legs’, but he’s a promising pup,” Abela said. “He hasn’t got ‘box speed’ but has explosive pace after a few strides.”

Abela pre-trained Aston Dynamo’s sire, former group race star Aston Bolero, and rates him “just like dad” in terms of his early acceleration.

“He’s also a beautiful animal… He’s so relaxed, he actually sleeps on his back,” Abela said.

Meanwhile, Zipping Walter’s trainer Lisa Delbridge said: “They are boxed right next to each other, it should be interesting… I think they will match strides early, but he will have to get across. He’ll gradually work his way to the rails; he has race sense.”

However, Delbridge said the “real test will be the 450-metre trip”. “He recently had five weeks off due to canine gastroenteritis… But he has been running very quick times over slightly shorter distances, so I think he’ll run it out.”

Delbridge added that Zipping Walter had a “strong will to win”. “Everything is go-go-go with him… He’s full on!”

Don’t miss Aston Dynamo vs Zipping Walter in Race 7 (8.58pm) at Ballarat on Wednesday night.
