Weblec aces rivals in classical fashion

Weblec Ace has scored a deserved first feature race win by taking out the Group 3 Cranbourne Classic (520m) this evening.

Starting as a $2.60 favourite after being the fastest heat winner (in 29.92sec), the Jeff Britton-trained youngster used his customary early pace to open up a sizeable lead before holding off the fast-finishing Get It Gizmo (Harry Manolitsis) by just under a length in 30.15sec.

Britton had four runners in the age-restricted final, with Spearhead his next best performer, finishing third.

“Weblec Ace probably deserves to win a final because this is the second series in a row he’s gone the quickest in the heats,” Britton remarked during the week, referring to his youngster’s efforts in the recent Warragul St. Leger series, in which he was an unplaced favourite in the final.

Bred in SA by Jane McNicholl, Weblec Ace (Kinloch Brae and Weblec Rose) collected a $25,000 first prize in his 14th career start (eight wins).

Britton, of Anakie, is enjoying a dream recent run, having won the St. Leger with Mepunga Daniel.
