Sam shortens for Sandown Cup

Rippin’ Sam’s extraordinary come-from-behind win in last weekend’s Group 1 Galaxy (715m) in Perth has seen him firm into equal favouritism for $2.80 for next month’s Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup (715m).

The young Victorian stayer trailed by about 15 lengths at the half way mark before storming home to claim the $100,000 first prize over local stars Moment To Jive and Quick Jagger.

“I wasn’t surprised by his performance,” trainer Robert Britton said. “Even during the race when he got so far back, I was pretty confident because I know how good his last section is.”

“I’ll be setting him for the Speed Star (at May 10 at Sandown Park) and then the Sandown Cup.”

Fellow Sandown Cup favourite is Rippin’ Sam’s less-established litter brother and kennelmate, Tornado Tears, who wowed on-lookers with his one and only staying attempt on 5 April, running within half a length of Miata’s 41.17sec Sandown Park track record.

WATCH: Rippin’ Sam (4) wins the Group 1 Galaxy last Saturday night.
