Puleio pups light up Bendigo as Gold Rush final looms

There are big days in greyhound racing and then there are the kind Darren and Mick Puleio experienced at Bendigo last weekend.

The owner-breeders produced a remarkable result in the Jarrod Larkin Concreting Gold Rush Maiden heats, winning four of the five heats.

A moment that even caught Darren by surprise.

“The first winner I was excited, the second I thought it’s a good afternoon,” he said.

“By the third I didn’t think it could get much better and the fourth, well, I didn’t think it was possible.”

Headlining the quartet is debutant Organised Crime, who delivered a jaw-dropping 23.42-second performance over 425 metres – just two lengths shy of the track record in his first race start.

Trained by Justin Nolan, the youngster has drawn box one for Sunday’s final and shapes as the one to beat.

“His run was extraordinary,” Puleio said.

“For a young dog to run that sort of time first-up on race day is incredible.”

Organised Crime wins from box two.

Organised Crime won’t have it all his own way, with three of his littermates (by Bernardo out of Easy Choice) also lining up.

Street Diva (box two) showed grit beyond her experience when pushing through early trouble to win her heat, while Steal The Stage (box seven), trained by Peter Presutto, impressed with a slick 23.84-second victory from a wide draw.

Street Diva wins from box two.

The fourth Puleio contender, Tremor (box 8), brings race experience into the final. Prepared by James Presutto, the son of Aussie Infrared has had four starts and continues to build.

“Tremor is a work in progress,” Puleio said.

“There’s ability there – we just need to bring it out on race day.”

Despite the eye-catching results, Puleio remains grounded.

“There were no standouts early, but they’re improving as we go,” he said.

“We won’t get carried away – we’ll take it easy and see what comes.”

The rich Jarrod Larkin Concreting Gold Rush Maiden Final is race 7 on their Easter Sunday card at Bendigo.
