Victorian star Wrongly Accused has produced a remarkable performance to claim the Group 1 National Sprint Championship Final (515m) at Sandown Park.
The victory delivered trainer Justin Nolan his first Group 1 triumph and ended an 11-year drought for Victoria in the National Sprint Championship.
“I have been in a few, but I have finally got one,” Nolan said.
Wrongly Accused only gained a start in the final following the scratching of South Australian Utter Madness, but the opportunity was all he needed.
At just his 15th career start, Wrongly Accused showed the track sense and determination of a seasoned campaigner, navigating his way through the field before powering home to score in 29.54 seconds.
“I looked at the leaders up the back and thought he would really struggle to get there,” Nolan said.
“I can’t believe it – he just keeps chasing.”
Winsome Jet finished runner-up, with Iconic Guess rounding out the placings in third.
