Cassar’s Caco Magic ready to light up Sale Cup

Caco Magic might be the newest name among greyhound racing’s elite, but the rising star has wasted no time demanding attention as he prepares to tackle the Group 1 TRFM Sale Cup on Saturday night.

Unbeaten in five starts and already a track record holder, the Stefano Cassar–bred, owned and trained chaser has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting middle-distance prospects in the state.

Caco Magic announced himself as a genuine headline act on Phoenix night at The Meadows, where he broke a decade-old track record.

“It was a shock to see him break the track record – it was out of this world,” Cassar said.

“It is something that you dream of – especially when you do everything yourself.”

That record-breaking run sparked immediate interest from buyers, with Cassar confirming he turned down a six-figure offer to sell the dog.

Caco Music broke the 600 metre track record at The Meadows from box six.

Cassar’s journey back to racing’s top tier has been a tough one. A fire tore through his Creswick kennels in recent years, injuring his wife and leaving the family facing a long and painful recovery.

To now be preparing a Sale Cup runner bred, owned and trained at home has made the moment all the more significant.

Caco Magic earned his place in Saturday night’s Group 1 by leading all the way in his heat last weekend, defeating Gippsland local Panama Rhode in convincing fashion.

“He pulled up really well from his heat win. I think the last 20 metres he got a bit tired, but it was the furthest he has run so far,” he said.

“I am hoping to see him improve second up in the Cup. That run will tell us a lot – if he improves his run home time then we will step him up further.”

Caco Magic won his Sale Cup heat from box eight.

Drawn in box three, Caco Magic faces an elite field headed by two-time Group 1 winner Without A Trace, who was the fastest qualifier for the Group 1 TRFM Sale Cup.

“He ran two lengths off Without A Trace in the heats – it’s a huge challenge to go up against her but I think he will be up there with a bit of luck,” Cassar said.

“I think the middle distance really suits his racing pattern,” he said.

“Stepping up in distance, he can jump with them and muster quickly to put time on the board over all sections.”

As anticipation builds for Saturday night, Cassar admits he is savouring every moment.

“I’m too excited by this dog – I love having a dog as good as him.”
