Slick Splits lived up to his name in style, taking out the Group 1 Maturity Classic (525m) at The Meadows on Saturday night.
Owners Jason Lyne and Nick Majer, of the City/Country Syndicate, made the trip down from New South Wales to witness their greyhound’s first Group 1 triumph.
“Not in our wildest dreams did we think we’d be here,” Lyne said.
“This is beyond our wildest expectations.”
Slick Splits lowered his personal best to a slick 29.73 seconds, but it was his stunning run home -clocking 12.10 seconds, that had Sky Racing’s Nathan Rooney singing his praises.
“He’s shaved two or three lengths off his run home time from the heats – it really puts him in elite company. I think we’ve unearthed a star tonight,” Rooney said.
By Feral Franky out of Foxy Bourbski, Slick Splits hails from a litter that originally saw pups advertised for just $6,000.
Remarkably, Feral Franky’s trainer Jack Smith was the only one to purchase and that pup was Magpie Hector, who has since won three from six starts, including a sharp 29.64 second run over 520m at Wentworth Park. Smith brought him down to trial at The Meadows earlier in the week.
Slick Splits is trained by Team Dailly, who enjoyed a night to remember. They had three of the top four placings in the Maturity Classic – Shima Time finished second and Upset Sunset fourth. They also claimed the Group 3 Fireball (730m) with Ethanol Water and added wins in Race 7 with Shima Stan and Race 11 with Paw Yanelle to their nights tally.
Slick Splits has now won nine of his 13 career starts and has earned close to $115,000 in prize money. He is also undefeated in seven starts at The Meadows.
“I was confident he’d run well, but it’s a Group 1 -there are always so many variables,” Lyne said.
“His run was phenomenal – just freakish, really.”
