Dragsters to light up Healesville Cup heats

All eyes will be on Healesville on Sunday with heats of the G2 Sportsbet Healesville Cup kicking off for 2024.

This year’s event will see a changing of the guard following a 2023/24 racing season where the three greyhounds that dominated the year’s feature events – Maybe Yesterday (Healesville Cup, Members Trophy), Unleash Collinda (Vic & National Straight Track) & Destructively (Highway 31, Puppy Champs & The Emerald) – all not racing in this year’s event due to injury or retirement.

With six heats, the winners of each heat and the two fastest second placegetters will progress to next Sunday’s $57,500 final.

A look at each heat:

Race 2 – Heat 1 (11.26am)
The first heat shapes up as a clash between two Healesville Cup winning trainers David Geall (2021) and Brooke Ennis (2014 & 2017). The Geall camp puts the polish on the fastest greyhound at Healesville this year, Aston Fantastic, while Brooke Ennis prepares recent Victorian Straight Track Champion, Zipping Gryllis.

Race 3 – Heat 2 (11.42pm)
One of the more intriguing heats with some greyhounds that hold fast PB’s Blue Blood (19.05), Myola Nick (19.06) and some city winners with serious straight track upside in Bernie Burrow and Mepunga Ollie.

Race 4 – Heat 3 (11.57pm)
The national straight track champion Mile A Minute has an imposing PB of 18.94 but will face stiff opposition from the likes of Seagull Rock and NSW Raider Jazzy Ethics.

Race 5 – Heat 4 (12.12pm)
House of Turbo, Serial Sticker & Motion Sensor head into this without race experience ‘up the straight’, while Pat Ability is one of only four greyhounds in this series to have broken 19 seconds.

Race 6 – Heat 5 (12.34pm)
Varied form lines are the theme of Heat 5 with Maturity winner Follow The Band taking on Express Ethics (NSW), Sheezel (QLD) and recent Jess Hopkins acquisition Canya Untamed (NSW) while Spot Fox, Dr. Asher and Lightning Al all have claims.

Race 7 – Heat 6 (12.59pm)
QLD raider Valhalla returns to Healesville for the first time since the cup heats last year and faces stiff competition in the form Maturity placegetter Mepunga Tully, My Magic Man, Grand Tourer and Description.

Join Jason Adams and Corey Smith on Sky Racing 1 prior to each heat. The Healesville Cup box draw will be live via the Watchdog App after Race 9.
