Asked why Minh Alfie has moved to a new trainer, Bailey said: “Couple of reasons; this might sound very egotistical and I’m only a mug.”
“I need city dogs,” he said.
“He can probably win in town that dog, but I need dogs that are going to fly the lids, be three in front.
“I’ve got a certain caliber of dog that I’ve got in my mind that I want. I’ve got a million pups coming through, so I’ve got to keep going forward.
“The sad bit for me is Alfie, and I’ve got his brother Benny, I love them. He’s the most beautiful dog.
“When he won the race I put him in his kennel that night, then I let them out – they’re never locked in their kennels because I believe in socialising them and they’re the happiest dogs – and he jumps up on my chest and looks at me and says, ‘I did ya proud, Dad’. And I go, ‘I love ya buddy, I love ya’.”
Bailey said he was thoroughly enjoying the ride as a hobby greyhound trainer, with the support of the group 1-winning thoroughbred trainer Mick Kent Snr in his corner.
“Mick’s been with me – I love him, I love the bloke – he’s been with me the whole way,” Bailey said.
“He’s come to all the trials, we stood out in the rain, he’s been thrown out of the room where everyone sits down to watch the races because they’re closing the joint. He’s watched all the trials, he’s given me advice, we hardly ever argue.”
There are no details yet on who has purchased Minh Alfie from Bailey.
