Quiet journey home for one

Young trainer Kayla Cottrell is confident her star greyhound Journey Beyond can acquit himself well in a heat of the Group 2 Warragul Cup (460m) tonight.

Cottrell, 21, is no stranger to winning the Warragul Cup, taking out the race with Robbie Rotten in 2022.

Lining up from Box 1 in the first heat tonight (Race 4 at 8.12pm), Journey Beyond will be having his third run back from a spell as he looks to improve on his outstanding record of 14 wins from just 20 starts.

“I don’t doubt his ability. He has shown he can compete against the best,” Cottrell said.

“He won a Match Race on Bendigo Cup night and he also ran a very smart 2nd to Amron Boy in a heat of the Cranbourne Cup.”

Cottrell identified reigning Shepparton Cup winner Lektra Heckler, trained by her partner Jake Loverso, as the main danger to Journey Beyond.

“On form, Lektra Heckler will be hard to beat. He has won three in a row.”

“It’s a shame they’ve drawn in the same heat, but that’s the way it goes.”

“It might be a quiet trip home for one of us,” she laughed.
