Up-and-coming superstar Morton may be considered unlucky not to have been picked up by a slot holder in next Saturday’s $1.65 million The Phoenix, but he could jag his first Group 1 on the night in the Sportsbet Silver Chief (525m).
Six heats of the age-restricted event for male greyhounds were run this evening at The Meadows, with the Jessica Sharp-trained speedster the quickest winner, clocking 29.705 seconds.
Morton is the fastest greyhound at The Meadows this year under race conditions running 29.55 seconds in October, and he has now won seven from nine over the track/distance and nine from 14 overall.
Saturday’s $100,000 to-the-winner Sportsbet Silver Chief will be Morton’s first run in a group final.
The Michelle Mallia-trained Fernando Phil was the second quickest heat winner, while Tom Dailly will rug three of the eight finalists after preparing two heat winners and the fastest runner-up.
