Yachi Bale one in a Million

An almost incomprehensible semi-final victory has Yachi Bale one step away from creating history as the first sprinter to complete the Melbourne Cup – Million Dollar Chase feature double.

In just his third victory since his barnstorming Melbourne Cup triumph last November, Yachi Bale came from what appeared to be an impossible position to book a berth in Friday night’s $1 million to-the-winner MDC Final at Wentworth Park (race 8, 8.27pm).

Trained by Mark Delbridge, Yachi Bale looked to be out of play on the first turn when flirting with the outside fence, but he staged a miraculous recovery to grab Isle’s Entity in the shadows of the post, clocking 29.98sec.

“To win the Million Dollar Chase and the Melbourne Cup would be sensational.”

“I thought his chances were gone on the first corner,” Delbridge admitted.

“I thought that’s the end of that, but he just kept coming.

“It was a big run but so was his Melbourne Cup win. He was second last at the winning post the first time in the Melbourne Cup.

“He’s been injured a bit and had no preparation for this race whatsoever, after he pulled up sore in the groin after the State National Sprint Final (August 10).

“To win the Million Dollar Chase and the Melbourne Cup would be sensational, but just to be in the Million Dollar Chase is terrific.”

WATCH: “What a spectacular performance!” YACHI BALE (B1) returned to his brilliant best to storm into Friday night’s MDC Final with a jaw-dropping 29.98sec semi victory.

Prior to his gobsmacking semi display, Yachi Bale had won only twice in 26 appearances since the Melbourne Cup, both over middle distances, a G1 Sale Cup heat and a Grade 5 Sandown success, albeit he’d finished second on ten occasions.

The September ’20 son of Allen Deed and Sammy Allen, chose the perfect time to open his Wentworth Park account, having finished runner-up in three of his previous four starts at the famed Sydney circuit.

If he’s to become the second Victorian – after McInerney in 2022 – to win the MDC in its sixth running, Yachi Bale will need to achieve another career ‘first’ after drawing box eight.

Yet to win in six career starts from ‘the pink’, Yachi Bale is $11 with Sportsbet.

“He’s got out pretty well at his last two runs in Sydney but then he hasn’t got the pace to go with them – that’s his problem,” Delbridge said.

“There’s a lot of speed on his inside and he just needs to get around the first corner without getting knocked over.

“If he can possie up within three or four lengths of them, then he’s probably got every chance.”

Three Victorians have qualified for the Million Dollar Chase decider, with Postman Pat (box 3) and Tinker Norm (box 6) winning their semis in 29.58sec and 29.96sec respectively.

Former Kiwi Postman Pat, trained by Jason Thompson, is $2.25 favourite, while Tinker Norm is $7.50 to hand Balliang owner/trainer/breeder Craig Burns, a former real estate agent, a fairy tale and life-changing celebration.

Earlier in Friday night’s massive Wentworth Park meeting, Yachi Bale’s litter brother and kennelmate Zoha Bale looms as a key player in the G2 Sydney Cup (720m), worth $100,000 to-the-winner.

Winner of 10 of his last 12 starts, Zoha Bale (box 1) is the $3.60 second elect after coming from second last to finish third in his heat on debut at Wentworth Park.

“I trialled him at Wentworth Park and he went 41.81sec, but he hasn’t had a lot of experience from box eight and he just kept bumping into other dogs,” Delbridge said.

“It was a good run to finish third and with another look under his belt and drawing box one he’s a good chance, as long as nothing crosses him or cuts him out.”
