Thompson’s double Nationals delivery

Jason Thompson might never get a better chance to add a National Championship to his illustrious resume than in Saturday’s Grand Finals being staged on home territory for the champion Victorian trainer.

Thompson has the hot favourite for both the $136,750 Group 1 National Sprint Championship (525m), to be held at The Meadows, in Postman Pat ($1.40) and the G3 National Straight Track Championship (350m) at Healesville, Unleash Collinda ($2.35).

Both Thompson’s finalists have drawn box three.

New Zealand import Postman Pat boasts a perfect five from five record in the white vest, including a scorching 29.60sec victory on debut at The Meadows, while Unleash Collinda has won five of his seven starts from box three.

“It’s good when the so-called experts write good dogs off, because there’s nothing better than proving them wrong.”

The superstar duo also have sensational overall records.

Postman Pat has won 20 from 26 at 77 per cent.

Unleash Collinda is 32 from 50, proving almost invincible at Healesville, where he’s been victorious in 18 of his 21 appearances  – an incredible 86 per cent – and holds both the 300m and 350m records.

“Hopefully they’ll both be very competitive,” Thompson said.

“They’re racing in their own state, in their own backyard, which is a big advantage.

“The draw is okay for Postman Pat, but I’m not sure about Unleash Collinda. I haven’t seen a lot of the NSW dog, Shall Not (box 2), but he looks like he wants to move right.

“If I had to pick one as the best winning chance, I think Postman Pat would be the one.”

WATCH: “Trans-Tasman superstar” POSTMAN PAT (B5) claimed a thrilling victory over TINKER NORM (B1) in the Victorian National Sprint Final, clocking a BON 29.79sec.

Postman Pat, a son of Thompson’s former freakishly talented dual G1 winner Hooked On Scotch, has taken all before him since relocating to Australia, winning 10 from 12, remarkably each victory in best of meeting time.

The flying former Kiwi showed another string to his bow when winning the Victorian Sprint Final after missing the start from box five before driving to the lead on the first turn and digging deep to hold Tinker Norm at bay in 29.79sec.

“He’s had a perfect preparation; there’s no excuses,” Thompson said.

“He’s had a couple of nice hit-outs since he won the state final.

“Hopefully, this is the week he gets the start right.

“He didn’t begin the best in his last run, but I thought it was a great effort to win like that. He showed he’s not one dimensional and doesn’t have to lead to win.”

Thompson also clearly got enormous satisfaction from Unleash Collinda’s victory in last Sunday afternoon’s Victorian Straight Track Final.

Unleash Collinda, a well-related son of Beast Unleashed and Audacious Bell, suffered two rare Healesville defeats in his previous three starts, both at the hands of arch-rival Maybe Yesterday.

After running third in the heat at $1.60, the ‘King of Healesville’ remarkably drifted to $3 from box one in the decider, where he turned the tables on Maybe Yesterday, silencing any critics in a scorching 18.89sec, just over three lengths outside his 18.64sec course benchmark.

Betting suggests $2.50 second elect Maybe Yesterday (box seven), trained by Andrew Paraskevas, is once again the main threat.

“I think it’s good when the so-called experts write good dogs off, because there’s nothing better than proving them wrong,” Thompson said.

“At the end of the day, they’re animals, not machines, and they’re all going to get beaten.

“Maybe Yesterday is an out-and-out super dog in his own right. It’s certainly no disgrace to be beaten by him.

“I probably would’ve preferred Unleash Collinda to draw a bit closer to the middle. But it’s more about getting the start right against these dogs; Unleash Collinda isn’t going to run Maybe Yesterday down and probably vice versa.”

While Saturday looms as a golden opportunity for Thompson to add an overdue National title to his trophy cabinet, the Pearcedale powerhouse isn’t feeling any pressure to break the perceived hoodoo.

“To be honest, I wouldn’t have entered the dogs in the Nationals if the finals weren’t being held in Victoria,” he said candidly.

“I think the most important thing about the Sprint Championship is the top four go straight through to the Million Dollar chase semi-finals. That’s a great incentive.”
