Sharp speedsters to set Meadows ‘Afire’

While Jason and Jessica Sharp are currently holidaying in Hawaii, the husband-and-wife team are still set to make ‘waves’ at The Meadows on Saturday night.

Afire is “a really good chance” of upsetting Postman Pat in the Victorian National Sprint Championship heats, while boom youngster Morton is aiming to continue the perfect start to his career with a third straight win.

Relatively recent acquisition Afire has been a pleasant surprise for the Sharps since an eye-catching 29.85sec success at The Meadows at his first start for the Lara couple on May 31.

The February ’21 son of Bernardo and Eau Rouge has won three from nine for his new trainers, finishing unplaced only twice, and has more than held his own in elite company in recent outings.

Afire earned a shot at the National Sprint series with a scorching last start 29.24sec Best Of Night effort at Sandown Park, after running second to superstars Postman Pat and Baby Jaycee at his previous two runs.

WATCH: “Blazing a trail to victory!” AFIRE (B6) earned a crack at the National Sprint Championship with a sizzling 29.24sec BON victory at Sandown Park on July 27.

Afire will take another shot at Postman Pat in Saturday’s third National Sprint heat (race 7, 8.38pm), this time with the priceless advantage of box one, with Sportsbet marking him the $5 second elect.

“I think Afire is a really good chance off ‘the red’,” said Jason Sharp.

“Postman Pat wouldn’t want to do anything wrong, but Afire can’t make a mistake either.

“If Postman Pat jumps and gets in front, I don’t think we can beat him, but box one gives us a chance.

“He hasn’t really drawn a box since we’ve had him, so we’re hoping he can make the most of it.

“When Ed (Burrett) bought Afire he thought he might be a handy city dog, but we didn’t expect him to go as good as he went first-up for us at The Meadows. He’s just shown that little bit of improvement every week.

“After last week’s win I thought he’s got to have a crack at the National Sprint.”

Earlier in the night, lightly-raced sensation Morton will be striving to complete a Meadows hat-trick, having opened his career with electrifying 29.89sec and 29.77sec victories.

A December ’21 son of former WA champion Tommy Shelby and Chloe Louise, Morton is $1.60 to continue on his winning way when he exits box six in race 2 (6.57pm).

“He’s going very good,” Sharp said understatedly.

“He’s probably the fastest dog we’ve ever had!”

He then quickly added, “He’s probably the fastest dog we’ve ever had!”

“One of our owners (Darrell Heathcote) bought two pups from the litter and we reared them, broke them in and pre-trained them.

“Morton only broke in fair – I wouldn’t say he was above average – but every time we’ve taken him to the track he’s improved.

“We’ll just try and look for the right races for him. The (G3) SA Derby is coming up and then a bit later on there’s races like the Silver Chief and the Derby in Sydney.

“It’s a bit surprising there haven’t been any offers for him yet, but those times might scare a few people off, and I don’t think Darrell would sell him anyway.

“His brother (Stormy Day) actually broke in a little bit quicker than Morton, but Jess always thought Morton was a bit of a smoky. The brother injured a metacarpal, but he should be ready to start trialling again when we get home.”

There has been some speculation on social media linking Morton with a slot in the third edition of The Phoenix, with the eight slot holders to be unveiled on September 8.

And despite his tender age and lack of experience, the Sharps would certainly take the phone call.

“It would be nice to have two runners in The Phoenix – Morton and Afire!” Jason quipped.
