Life is a ‘Highway’

The Anthony Azzopardi juggernaut could roll on at Healesville on Sunday.

Based at Rowsley, the master trainer has a three-pronged chance in the $21,000 Highway 31 Maiden Challenge final (300m) – Race 4, 11.05am.

On Wednesday, Azzopardi produced three winners (all debutants) from the six heats – including fastest heat winner Pass The Buck (16.44sec).

Kennelmates joining him in the $15,000 to-the-winner final are Judgement Day (16.58sec) and Candyman (16.85sec).

Pass The Buck (Dec ’21 Bernardo x On The Runway) is a younger half-brother of 2022 Group 2 Shepparton Cup winner Substantial and 2021 The Prospector winner Rebellious – all three bred and owned by father/son team Michael and Darren Puleio.

“I’m very happy with the ‘pink’… He’s not a ‘crasher’ and usually goes pretty straight.”

Ironically, Azzopardi took out last month’s The Prospector at Bendigo with Renegade Cochise. And last Friday he claimed the rich Southern Stars with Big Daddy at Goulburn.

Pass The Buck’s dam, On The Runway – also bred and owned by the Puleios – is a litter sister of former stars Poke The Bear, Out Of Range and Fully Loaded.

Azzopardi has a good opinion of the highly promising youngster, who will exit from box eight in the ‘Highway 31’.

“I’m very happy with the ‘pink’,” Azzopardi said. “He’s not a ‘crasher’ and usually goes pretty straight.

“He’s my main chance in the final and certainly has the ability to be a really nice type.”

WATCH: JUDGEMENT DAY (B2) makes an auspicious 16.58sec debut in a Highway 31 Maiden Challenge heat at Healesville on Wednesday.

Azzopardi is also buoyant on the futures of Judgement Day (Box 3) and Candyman (Box 5).

“Judgement Day has been trialling well, but it’s pretty hard to give a complete assessment at such an early stage.

“I couldn’t be more happier with him, but he needs to be near the ‘fence’.

“Candyman has been the biggest improver out of the trio. But he’s had a limited preparation leading into the series and the ‘yellow’ draw isn’t going to do him any favours.”
