The Stir Up | Geelong Gold Cup Edition

GRV’s Peter Quilty, Gerard Guthrie and Trent Langskaill provide their thoughts on some of the star greyhounds racing in Victoria.

Keep an eye on these, they are worth saving in your WatchDog Blackbook!

Quilts  Gents, if the action from the seven heats are any indication, Friday night’s Group 2 Sportsbet Geelong Gold Cup Final should be an absolute ripper.

Gerard  Quilts, Crackerjack Bull (Box 1) is the least experienced finalist with 15 starts, but he was terrific in his heat over a field that included Launching Pad Consolation winner Make No Promise.

Trent  How about the form of Mepunga Warrior (Box 2) after 95 starts? His effort to chase down Stealth last Friday night replicated his Group 3 Easter Gift triumph one week earlier.

Gerard  Storm Stroller (Box 3) was a Geelong Gold Cup finalist last year and he showed his customary early speed in his heat. He loves the 520-metre trip with five wins from seven races.

Quilts  Mepunga Mustang (Box 4) is the second finalist for trainer Jeff Britton, who trained Weblec Jet to Geelong Gold Cup glory in 2021. Is a ‘Mepunga’ quinella a possibility?

Gerard  “If he begins like he did last week, he’ll take a power of beating” was the thoughts of Anthony Azzopardi about Adhana Rico (Box 5), but he admitted to me that the fastest heat winner will need luck.

Trent  Nelvin Bale (Box 6) caused the biggest boilover last Friday night. He did finish second to Adhana Rico in consecutive runs at The Meadows before the heats, so you never know.

Quilts  Can Kelsey Bale secure back-to-back country cups? She repeated her Ballarat Cup heroics by overcoming a slow getaway in her heat last Friday night and she had Box 7 in the Ballarat Cup Final.

Gerard  Amron Dan (Box 8) was brave in defeat to Adhana Rico and only three heat winners went quicker than Amron Dan, so he cannot be dismissed lightly despite the outside draw.

Trent  We also get to see the return of Typhoon Sammy in Race 5 against fellow country cup king Ferdinand Boy. Tonight’s ANZAC Appeal Cup at Sandown Park is great with Yachi Bale and Baby Jaycee the standouts.
