Daily Mail: Good Friday of chasing in Victoria

A terrific clash between last Friday night’s G2 Ballarat Cup winner Compliance and Warrnambool Derby winner Mepunga Mustang highlights the fifth heat of the G2 Geelong Gold Cup tonight.

The sixth and final heat features recent G2 Shepparton Cup winner Substantial lining up against dual G2 country cup winner Yozo Bale and potential superstar Big Opal Rocks.

Meetings are also being staged at Healesville and Traralgon.

The Watchdog says
? : He has proven to be a reliable beginner to date, and he has been racing well in much stronger company of late. He should have no trouble clearing SALLY’S RETURN (1) and this appears to be his ideal distance range, so if he does find the top early, he will prove hard to reel in.

The Watchdog says
? : KID MALAWI (8) is a Healesville specialist, and he rarely misses a place up the straight. GOLD DRILLER (1) will appreciate the slight drop in class and is drawn to lead from go to whoa. GRACIE BALE (2) really impressed in her scorching win at The Meadows, and she looks ideally drawn tonight. She should be able to lob onto the rail and head to the back in the top five and she will really power to the line.

? $3 Win – MEPUNGA MUSTANG

? Must Watch Race ?

Fifth heat of Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup

? Geelong ? Race 8
? Box 2 ? 520m ⏱ 7:31pm

TAB fixed odds: $2.30 Win

The Watchdog says ?: MEPUNGA MUSTANG (2) faces a tough task taking on COMPLIANCE (5), however I think the race should be run to suit. There is a stack of early speed, so the favourite is going to have to work hard to find the front. If ‘Mustang’ can land around third or fourth and avoid trouble, he should turn for home in a threatening position and he can then run over the top late.

‘Must Watch Race’ Preview ?:

There are six great heats and this one features last Friday night’s Group 2 Ballarat Cup champion COMPLIANCE (5). He showed phenomenal early pace before carving out a ridiculous 24.87sec and a similar performance tonight should see him set a cracking pace and head to the back straight with a commanding lead. He has won over 500m, however it is clear that 450m is his ideal distance range, so the last 50m is a big query. MEPUNGA MUSTANG (2) has obliterated the clock at every provincial circuit he has been too, and he has shown that he can run a true 500m with sizzling wins around The Meadows and Sandown Park. There is a stack of early pace in this event, so his other rivals may make the favourite work hard early, and he will get a nice sit just off the speed. With some luck in running, he will be there to pounce. HADOUKEN (7) needs to be respected, but he just isn’t running out a true 500m these days.
