TAB Great Chase Metro & Outer Metro

The third TAB Great Chase event for 2021 was held via Zoom on Wednesday, in support of Victoria’s disability sector.

More than twenty community groups associated with The Meadows, Sandown and outer metro clubs Healesville and Geelong joined to watch the races for the chance to share in $2,500 prize money.

In 2021, the Great Chase is being conducted virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, this hasn’t stop groups sharing in the fun, including cheering on greyhounds that have been randomly allocated to them for the day.

Three community groups tied for first place having been matched to the better performing dogs: Wintringham Community Services – Ron Conn Nursing Home, Wintringham Community Services – Post Melbourne and Wintringham Community Services – Gilgunya. Each pocketed $400.

Coming in at second place was Rett Syndrome Association of Australia Inc. who scored themselves $800 and third place went to Oaklands Riding for the Disabled who won $400.

A consolation prize of $100 was also awarded to the team that came last, Caladenia Dementia Centre from Healesville, which has been attending the Great Chase for around three to four years, and they were the only group on the Zoom call representing Healesville.

Caladenia representative Jo Wetjen said: “The gentlemen absolutely love it, we get dressed up, we enjoy the entertainment. Pre-covid they loved being at the track patting the dogs. It’s just a great day and it’s something we always look forward to on our social calendar. It’s great for social connection and community.”

All groups that have been involved in our three 2021 TAB Great Chase events are invited to the ‘virtual’ TAB Great Chase Grand Final, to be held on Wednesday 20 October.

Eight lucky groups will be randomly drawn and allocated a greyhound in the Grand Final and share in $24,000 in prize money courtesy of GRV and the TAB, including $10,000 for the group matched to the winning dog.
