TAB Great Chase goes west

GRV was proud to host the first ‘virtual’ TAB Great Chase event for 2021 on Wednesday afternoon, in support of Victoria’s disability sector.

More than 25 community groups based across west and northern Victoria logged on to watch the races for the chance to share in $2,500 in prize money.

In 2021, the Great Chase is being conducted virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pandemic did not stop groups sharing in the fun, including cheering on greyhounds that had been randomly allocated to them.

2020 Great Chase Grand Final winners, Wood ‘n’ Crete, a group based in Ararat and aligned with the Horsham Greyhound Racing Club, joined the call and explained what their $10,000 winnings from last year went towards.

“We invested in a brand new outdoor area which we are looking forward to utilising when COVID-19 restrictions lift and all our activities are back,” said Cheryle from Wood’n’Crete.

The biggest winners from today’s event was Scope organisation Weeroona Avenue, a group from Bendigo which collected $1,200.

Sylvia and Ken from Scope Weeroona Avenue were ecstatic about the win.

“Thank you so much to Greyhound Racing Victoria for all you do for us and in this space…it’s very exciting,” Sylvia said.

Second place and a cheque for $800 went to Home at Scope Childers Street, a group from Warrnambool. Tied in third place were Uniting Wimmera, also from Bendigo and Vivid Echuca from the Shepparton region, with each taking away $200. Finishing up the running in last place was Gateway House from Warrnambool, which received a consolation prize of $100.

There are more TAB Great Chase events to come this year with groups from the Gippsland region featuring in our next ‘virtual’ Great Chase event on Wednesday 6 October. This will be followed by groups associated with The Meadows, Sandown and outer metro clubs Healesville and Geelong on Wednesday 13 October.

All groups involved in the 2021 TAB Great Chase will be invited to the ‘virtual’ TAB Great Chase Grand Final, to be held virtually on Wednesday 20 October.

Eight lucky groups will be drawn a greyhound in the Grand Final and share in $24,000 in prize money courtesy of GRV and the TAB, including $10,000 to go to the group matched to the winning dog.
