Briganti’s solid ‘Rock’

Mario Briganti’s foundation brood matron Punk Rock Lass (May ’08 Vapour Whirl x Punk Portrait) has left an enduring legacy.

And her breeding dynasty should ‘rock’ tonight at Ballarat when Briganti rugs three finalists – Gitan (Box 2), Freda Rocks (Box 7) and Terzo Millennio (Box 8) – in the GRV Vic Bred Series Maiden (450m).

The 19-month-old tyros, who are Dec ’18 Fernando Bale x Red Rocks littermates, will be chasing a $7500 first prize in Race 4 at 7.58pm.

Red Rocks (by Barcia Bale), a daughter of Punk Rock Lass, won seven races from 13 starts. Her promising race career was halted due to seasonal issues. And her older half-sister, Rhonda Rocks (by Kinloch Brae), produced retired superstar Sennachie.

Meanwhile, Briganti says his young triumvirate are “still learning” and “their box draws have done them no favours”.

They may be “boxed inside out”, according to Briganti, but he’s still buoyant on the chances of Freda Rocks and Gitan, while far less confident about Terzo Millennio.

WATCH: Gitan (8) takes out a GRV Vic Bred Series Maiden heat (450m) in 25.41sec (Best) at Ballarat last week.

Pawnote: Based in Tuerong, a rural locality of the Mornington Peninsula, Briganti and his partner Deborah Mowat have spent around $80,000 building a new kennel block and upgrading their yards. They currently prepare a racing team of 12. And they also have a second Red Rocks litter (by Kinloch Brae) comprising four dogs and two bitches who were whelped last month.

“Ability-wise, Freda Rocks is my best hope… She’s the quickest and probably capable of around 25.20sec here,” Briganti said. “However, Gitan is an up-and-comer and it wouldn’t surprise me if she won. Terzo Millennio is the slowest of the three and probably can’t win, as he crashes to the fence.”

Briganti paid a glowing tribute to Punk Rock Lass, saying “she’s created a great foundation”.

“She’s been responsible for multiple city winners and her line just goes on and on… I’m looking forward to the next decade with these bloodlines.”

Briganti also has Manila Knight (May ’18 Barcia Bale x Angie Rocks) engaged on tonight’s Ballarat program.

An exciting middle-distance prospect, Manila Knight (Box 1) will contest a Mixed 4/5 (545m) – Race 7, 8.58pm.

“He’s better suited out wide, but it’s a quick run to the first turn and he should be in a handy position and then able round them up,” Briganti said.

Manila Knight’s dam, Angie Rocks, is also a daughter of Punk Rock Lass and a litter sister of Rhonda Rocks. She won 13 races from 40 starts and was runner-up in both the 2015 G1 Sapphire Crown and 2015 G3 SA Oaks.
