The Meadows Saturday: Burning questions

MISTER HARLEWOOD is described by The Watchdog as ‘the next big thing’ in staying ranks, and tonight at The Meadows he will take another step towards a likely Sandown Cup campaign later this month.

There’s plenty of intrigue surrounding another Jeff Britton-trained greyhound in the opening event this evening at 6.37pm, with The Watchdog tipping against the hot favourite SILKEN.

And the classy TAKEN is chasing his first win from box one, having scored from every other draw throughout his relatively short career.

Here’s what we look forward to learning tonight…

Q  Will hot favourite SILKEN (Race 1, 6.37pm) live up to her scintillating debut?

SILKEN has missed a place in two starts since her breathtaking first start victory at The Meadows in 29.86sec, the fastest time of the day. While she is expected to go around a clear favourite at around $2.00 tonight, The Watchdog is predicting an upset.

Q  Will MISTER HARLEWOOD (Race 8, 9.00pm) extend his unbeaten staying record?

The Australian Cup finalist has won two from two at Sandown since stepping up to staying ranks, however tonight’s task won’t be an easy one. Jeff Britton’s greyhound takes on a quality field including last year’s Sandown Cup runner-up ELLA ENCHANTED and reigning Sale Cup winner WEBLEC EAGLE.

Q  Can TAKEN (Race 9, 9.20pm) claim his first win from the red alley?

TAKEN has had just 25 starts, yet he has already won from every box other than the cherry. Granted, Jason Thompson’s greyhound has only had box one once before, for a third, but The Watchdog says he prefers a wide draw and is tipping against him. With four wins from his past six starts, he was a warm $2.30 favourite with TAB fixed odds this afternoon.
