The all-important box draw for Friday night’s 2019 TAB Melbourne Cup was conducted live on 7Mate’s ‘Thrill Of The Chase’ this morning, with Hooked On Scotch drawing box 8.
“I just want to do a summersault,” was the initial reaction from breeder and part-owner Darren Puleio.
Hooked On Scotch exited Box 8 in his TAB Melbourne Cup heat when breaking Sandown’s 515m track record in 28.939sec.
Jason Thompson’s superstar was the $1.80 favourite prior to the box draw, and surprisingly drifted out to $1.90 once the box draw was completed.
“I’m a bit shocked that Hooked On Scotch is out to $1.90,” said TAB’s Trent Langskaill.
Host James Van de Maat, buzzing in the knowledge he would be calling the Melbourne Cup Final, was pleasantly surprised by the generosity shown from TAB.
“I can’t believe Campini is at $8 after drawing Box 1. He is an enormous each way player in the Melbourne Cup,” he said.
