The annual Simon Benson Memorial Final (460m) will be held at Warragul tonight in memory of a larger than life character.
Simon Benson was only involved in greyhound racing for about 12 months, but he made a huge impression in that time as the ‘pro catcher’ of Paua Kennels, headed by leading greyhound trainer and close friend Steven White.
Despite not having a runner in tonight’s final, White will be taking a close interest in the race.
“I think Immediate is the one to beat. He’s a nice up-and-coming youngster,” White said.
Trained by Vince Tullio, Immediate has had five starts for four wins, and is the second favourite with TAB at $3.00. However, Steve said that if Simon was watching the race he’d be barracking for a particular outsider.
“Simon would be cheering for (trainer) Billy McMahon and his greyhound Dr. Abbie,” White said.
Dr. Abbie is rated a $10 chance with TAB after drawing box two.
Simon passed away in November 2016 from a heart attack at just 30 years of age, two months after he endured a serious leg injury in a bike accident.
He was a member of the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club, and was renowned for always being happy and telling wild stories.
The Simon Benson Memorial is open to greyhounds with 1-4 wins and carries a first prize of $5,000.
