Trainer Correy Grenfell is quietly confident that his young star Orson Allen can break through for his first win at group level in tonight’s age-restricted Group 3 Cranbourne Classic (520m) at 6.37pm.
Orson Allen, drawn in box two, has been backed in from $3.60 into $2.60 favourtism with tab.com.au.
“Looking at the box draw I think he’s a very good chance of jumping straight to the front, and if he does that he’ll be hard to beat,” Grenfell said.
Tonight will be Orson Allen’s third appearance in a group race final having also contested last month’s Bendigo Cup (4th) and Maturity Classic (2nd).
“He’s getting closer to a group win and hopefully tonight is his night. He has stepped up with the big boys real quick. He ran second in his heat, but he seemed to get a bit lost around the first corner, so he should improve on that run.”
Grenfell said My Redeemer, who has drifted from $3.00 favouritism out to $3.20, is the main danger to Orson Allen’s chances.
“He (My Redeemer) can really run, but whether he gets a clear passage from the squeeze box (five) remains to be seen. Slingshot Hammer beat Orson Allen in his heat and is the other major concern,” Grenfell said.
Following tonight’s Classic, Grenfell plans to set Orson Allen for next month’s Healesville Cup (350m).
