PREVIEW: Thompson receptive to a maiden win

Feature racing tonight heads to Ballarat for the GRV VIC Bred Maiden Final (450m) – Race 4 at 7:58pm – and with $10,710 up for grabs it has attracted a super field! Here are my thoughts…

1ST: I’m going to look for some value, and I like the Jason Thompson trained Receptive (box 8).

In his two career starts he has been slow away, which has seen him find trouble throughout. He is drawn out in box 8 and next to a fast beginner, which I think he can use to his advantage and hopefully get an unimpeded run to the finish line. The son of Barcia Bale and Cintiarna has a massive finish on him so I think if he is close enough mid race and can get a clear run he should finish on top. He is a terrific each way bet.

2ND: Main danger for mine is Argyle Lucifer (box 7). He sizzled in the early stages of his two starts to date, leading easily both times. If he repeats that again and finds the lead I think he will take a tremendous amount of running down. If he can’t cross the field early I don’t think he can win.

3RD: Hone In (box 4) was very impressive winning on debut, but he was slow away in his semi and he didn’t have much luck. He did finish the race off well but Receptive took considerable ground off him. Drawn awkwardly here he would need to begin better to avoid trouble early. If he can miss early interference he can certainly win.

4TH: Matt Machine (box 6) was awesome in his semi win last week in what was his best performance in his short career. He isn’t the best of starters so he will need luck early, but there is no denying his incredible talent. If he can produce something like his semi win then he is a major factor here.

Other chances in the wide open race include Dynamic Cauldron (box 1), who has the beautiful draw, and also Ocean Bay (Box 5), who has been racing particularly well but drawn terribly.
