WARRNAMBOOL CUP PREVIEW: Zambora Brockie Tipped on Top

It’s a massive week of racing in Warrnambool for the May Racing Carnival, but Wednesday night the greyhounds take centre stage for the running of the Group 2 $67,000 Warrnambool Cup (450m).

Eight heats were conducted last Wednesday night to decide the runners of the Group 2 feature. Here are my thoughts on how the final will play out and my top four selections.

I’m going with Zambora Brockie (Pictured with trainer Anthony Azzopardi). He was awesome winning his heat in the brilliant time of 24.78 seconds (Replay). He is armed with devastating early speed but he can be hit or miss at the start. In the Cup I expect him to ping out of the boxes and lead. If he does this I think he will be too good.

The main danger I believe is Aston Bolero. It wouldn’t be a cup without a Jason Thompson trained runner and this guy was super impressive in his heat win (Replay). Although I think he has a great change of speed if he can’t cross Zambora Brockie in the early stages I don’t think he can run him down.

I have to include Unlawful Entry in selection for 3rd place. He was awesome winning his heat last week in a flying 27.72 seconds. He has a mighty turn of speed on him but he doesn’t begin particularly well so he will need luck going into the first corner. If he receives that luck he will be very hard to hold out.

WATCH: Unlawful Entry take time honors in the Warrnambool Cup heats last Wednesday from box 3.

To The Galo’s would be an amazing story if victory sways in his directions after being purchased cheaply at the Bendigo Ready to Race Auction series in November 2014 (Heat replay).

Another greyhound to watch is Marbo’s Magic who is trying to bring up his 13th win in a row from only 14 starts (Heat replay).

Marley Bale has the perfect draw for him out in Box 8, coming off a Perth Cup Conciliation win in Western Australia from the same box (Heat replay).
