Buyers abuzz as ‘Unknown’ factor engulfs 2015 Ready 2 Race Sales

There were smiles aplenty at GRV’s Ready 2 Race Sales at Bendigo on Saturday as an abundance of greyhound owners, old and new, left Lords Raceway full of optimism having just bought into a greyhound.

While there were a couple of higher end purchases – namely Bernmar Rockstar ($27,750) and Cleo ($26,250) – there were also a number of potential steals with several greyhounds selling for around the $1,000 mark.

The day started with a total of 16 races (finals) comprising of fields of four greyhounds, which were graded based on times ran in the heats on November 22. Finishing positions and age also came into consideration.

“As a collective, there is far greater scope for improvement among the 2015 crop than in previous years.”

Keeping racegoers entertained throughout the morning was an outdoor broadcast by Crocmedia’s ‘Off the Bench’ radio team – Craig Hutchison, Liam Pickering and Dr. Turf – which beams into radio stations all over regional Victoria as well as Melbourne’s SEN.

Then, in the afternoon, a total of 57 greyhounds were sold at auction with only two lots being passed in.

While the average sale price was about $1,000 below that of last year, this can be attributed to the fact that there were a greater percentage of younger and unraced greyhounds this time around.

“As a collective, there is far greater scope for improvement among the 2015 crop than in previous years,” said GRV’s Andrew Copley.

“We want to see more hidden gems emerge from the pack in similar fashion to the likes of Cut Loose Max and To The Galo’s, who have made about 10 times more prize money than what they were sold for in the 2014 sales.”

For the third consecutive year Hutchison, Pickering and Dr. Turf purchased greyhounds for people who had won their weekly Saturday morning Dr. Who radio quiz during the year – most of whom were at Bendigo on Saturday. The team bough four greyhounds – to be shared among 40 people – many of whom are now first time greyhound owners.
