Victorian Studmaster Paul Westerveld has landed a major coup with Fernando Bale (pictured) to join Meticulous Lodge once his racing career ends.
Speaking after his greyhound Secret Spell won the Group 1 Hume Cup (600m) at The Meadows on Melbourne Cup eve, Westerveld said he had already collected several viles of semen from Fernando Bale, who many experts say is the best greyhound of all time.
“I have an arrangement with (Fernando Bale’s owner) Paul Wheeler that will see him stand with me, which I’m obviously pretty excited about. I’ve been to (trainers) Tom and Andrea Dailly’s place a few times and have collected about 30 viles from Fernando Bale already,” Westerveld said.
While Westerveld was tight-lipped about when Fernando Bale would retire from the racetrack, he is set to put his own bloodline to the eight-time Group 1 winner in the not-too-distant future.
“Secret Spell isn’t far from retirement and she will be mated to Fernando Bale. In fact, there’s a number of people already lined up to buy those pups.”
“Secret Spell isn’t far from retirement and she will definitely be mated to him. In fact, I’ve already got a number of people lined up to buy one of those pups once they’re born including (Tom’s brother) George Dailly.”
In further stud news, Meticulous Lodge is also set to land exciting international prospect Kiowa Producer (Dragon Fire – Kay V Sweetkay), who is currently serving time in quarantine.
The American bred Kiowa Producer, just four years of age, amassed the outstanding record of 50 wins from 94 starts.
“He comes to Australia fresh from the racetrack so he is yet to prove himself at stud, but any greyhound that can win 50 races is obviously pretty special.”
“He’ll offer another outcross to Australian breeders and the racetrack success of Fernando Bale, who is by USA sire Kelsos Fusileer, shows how well matings between Australian broodmatrons and American stud dogs can work,” Westerveld said.
American superstar Kiowa Producer will stand in Australia after winning 50 races.
