Youngster Wins At Riding Debut

17-year-old Ben Thompson (pictured), son of champion greyhound trainer Jason Thompson, made his debut as an apprentice jockey at Kilmore on Saturday, and in doing so he rode home his first winner.

After guiding Apassionata to fifth in his first ride (Race 2), Thompson steered Compassionate to victory in his second start (Race 5). He also had a fifth placing on Aces And Angels at Kilmore before heading to Hamilton on Sunday where he had one ride, Mr. Trim, who ran fourth.

Thompson caught up with RSN’s Nadia Horne this morning, where he spoke about the thrill of riding his first winner, and how much he appreciates the support of his family, and in particular his mum, Seona.

“(Each day) I’m up at 3:15 and then I tap her (mum) on the shoulder at 3:45am, and she staggers to the car (to drive me to track work). I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay her. She drove me to Hamilton (on Sunday) and I owe her big time. She’s in for a good mother’s day present next year. I’ll definitely look after her,” Thompson said.
