Over the past six months or so, I’ve had the pleasure of chatting to many different trainers. It would have to be one of my favourite parts of the job.
But last night I went to sleep wondering… are we seeing one of the best and biggest crop of high-performing young greyhounds we’ve ever seen?
Or is it recency bias?
Am I only thinking about this group of young greyhounds this way because I’m talking about them and hearing about times they have put on the board every day.
Is hindsight the only real lens for a topic like this? I don’t believe it is.
How many of us have watched a young greyhound and thought, wow, this dog has a future?
Or how many of us have been lucky enough to own or train one that we thought could make our lives that little bit easier financially? Or, quite simply, make our dreams come true?
My guess, and from personal experience… many.
So, it’s time to sit in and amongst the names that have me thinking this way.
Almost anything with the combination of Puleio and Presutto.
An exaggeration? Absolutely. But what is a good story without a little extra mayo?
In all seriousness, think Off The Chart, On The Prowl and the younger Steal The Stage, Tremor and Red Hot Diva.
Keeping the Puleio theme going, I can’t go past recent Horsham Cup winner Organised Crime.
Then there’s the Dewans. Dewana Star and the times he was putting on the board early in his career… scary. They also have the likes of Dewana Family, Dewana Lynette and a couple of others who haven’t raced yet that I believe they’re very excited about.
Then I start thinking about the Massina’s – Liddell and Dustin in particular.
The Thompsons? It’s crazy to think that Dramatical is only just shy of two-and-a-half years old. Realistically, pretty much anything young from the Thompson kennel could fit into this category.
And what about the Greenough’s? They’ve got a son of a gun in Refinement.
There’s Crackerjack Ralf, Paw Matic and the team of young greyhounds that fill Josh Formosa and Korie Heinrich kennels.
I’m sure I’ve missed dogs that deserve to be mentioned, and I’d genuinely love to hear who they are.
I’m not saying all of these dogs will win a million dollars or make it into the Hall of Fame. More so, that there are so many incredibly talented young greyhounds around at the moment, and I can’t wait to see who takes that next step and potentially become one for the history books.
Although hindsight is a wonderful thing, the question remains…
Is the excitement I feel around this crop of young greyhounds simply recency bias?
