Canya Mayhem Wins Gold Bullion Thriller

Written by Adam Dobbin, Greyhound Recorder.

Canya Mayhem has become the first greyhound to complete the Group 1 Melbourne Cup-Gold Bullion double with a heart-stopping victory in the feature sprint event at Q2 Parklands on Thursday night.

In a memorable finish to the $250,000-to-the-winner decider it was Victorian star Canya Mayhem which edged out NSW visitor Cumbria Chrissy in the final stride to claim the first Gold Bullion staged at The Q.

Last November, Canya Mayhem stamped his class with victory in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park before finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Phoenix at The Meadows.

The boom chaser ventured to Queensland with a big reputation and delivered in spades in the lucrative sprint feature on Thursday night.

“It’s the first time he’s come from behind to win something,” said Canya Mayhem’s trainer Jess Hopkins.

“As they swung past us for home I thought Cumbria Chrissy had it but he got his head down right on the line.

“I’m in disbelief. I said pre race that he’s probably underrated and I probably underrate him myself as well.

“The best way to describe him is that he’s a race dog. He loves to compete.”

Canya Mayhem’s Gold Bullion heroics saw the son of Bernardo’s prize money crack the magical million dollar mark.

His record now stands at 12 wins from the 22 appearances with a place in the Group 1 Temlee at The Meadows on Saturday week set to springboard the in-form galloper into the pointy end of the Group 1 Australian Cup series.

For Cumbria Chrissy’s caretaker trainer Tony Brett, it was oh so close to a winning Group 1 double after Victorian visitor Fade To Black annexed the Gold Cup (710m) in track record fashion.

The son of Fernando Bale outgunned the sport’s number 1 stayer Without A Trace in a galloping exhibition to behold to set a new time-standard in the process.

Canya Mayhem’s syndicate boss Nick Lalli was almost speechless from his Adelaide home, work commitments stopping him from getting to Queensland for the Gold Bullion.

“We bought him off break-in, he and his litter brother,” said Nick.

“The brother was a tick quicker than Canya Mayhem, but the breaker made a bold prediction that the blue dog would win the Golden Easter Egg.

“Everything about this dog is perfect,” said Nick of the Gold Bullion champ.

“Nothing phases him. Early days he was likely to crash to the rails, but at his first 10 starts he drew wide and it taught him to handle himself early.

“I can’t thank Jess enough. Her attention to detail with this dog, and all her dogs, is amazing.”

Immediate plans are for Canya Mayhem to head to The Sportsbet Temlee and then the Sportsbet Australian Cup.
