Osborne has Regal Huxley in box five in the Group 3 Warragul St Leger Final (460m) on Friday and believes it is a perfect draw for the son of Fernando Bale and Whizbang Betty.
Regal Huxley won his heat of the St Leger last week in 25.65 beating Irish Bill leading throughout at the juicy odds of $28.
“He should not have been $28 because he’d won his past two, at Sandown and in 29.95 at The Meadows,” Osborne said.
“And, he is a brilliant beginner who likes to run wide.
“The five box in the final is fine for him because of that, and I am quietly confident.
“But, the final field is very strong so it is hard to be over confident.”
Regal Huxley (4) wins his heat of the Warragul St Leger in a time of 25.64 seconds.
Osborne has had the dog since May.
“Sheldon Hamilton and his wife Kerry approached me to take on a few dogs and I liked the look of Regal Huxley,” Osborne.
“I went to school with Kerry’s daughter and Kerry used to pick me up to go to footy when I was in Under 16s.”
The partnership did not start well at all. Regal Huxley ran stone last at Ballarat on May 30.
But, in 15 starts since he has won eight.
“The heat was his first look at Warragul,” said Osborne. “So, we can expect him to improve from last week.
“But, it is very hard to map out the race with such a strong field.
“I think the one to beat is Settle For Less out there in the eight for Taylor Thornton.”
Jack is bullish about his dog’s potential.
“He’s only two and a half and has lots of improvement,” he said. “I’d like to think he might get 600 metres in the future.
“The only time he has got near the fence was when he went 29.95 winning at The Meadows two starts back.
“We are so pleased Sheldon and Kerry asked us to take on this dog. Very grateful to them.”
Osborne, 28, and his boss Michelle Mallia, have 25 dogs on the Avalon property.
Osborne also has first reserve Ridiculous for the St Leger final.
“She’s a very promising young bitch who has had only eight starts,” he said.
