Greyhound racing’s Galea family, based in Sunshine North, are no strangers to the excitement of straight track racing at Healesville.

Martin Galea and daughter Angela (pictured) enjoy plenty of short course success, assisted by Martin’s wife, and Angela’s mother, Doris, who works tirelessly in the background.

This Sunday’s heats of the Healesville Derby and Oaks will provide plenty of anticipation with numerous big names on show including Blackpool Flash, Paddy’s Marvel and Rilynn Bale.

And Angela is eagerly looking forward to it.

“I love the fact that when you go to Healesville there is such a diverse range of people – hobby trainers like myself and big-time trainers.”

“With racing on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday everyone gets an opportunity at Healesville, and of course there is the safety aspect of racing in a straight line.”

“Nominations are always high at the beautiful Yarra Valley location and with good reason.”

“I think a lot of young dogs find their balance at Healesville, and it is often a place where young dogs race in a full field for the first time.”

“It is a great place for greyhounds to learn to race, and to learn to get through a field, as well as being such a lovely day out, so I’m really looking forward to Sunday.”

Here’s Angela’s thoughts on her runners at Healesville tomorrow.

SECRET PACKAGE: Race 2, Box 3, 11.02pm
Angela says: “Secret Package is over four years of age, but he still loves racing and is still very competitive, and of course he enjoys straight track racing at Healesville, with so many of his career starts taking place there.”

THREE BEARS: Race 6 Box 5, 12.14pm
Angela says: “He is a young dog with plenty to learn and he does keep learning, so I think he is great each-way value despite being up against a star in Paddy’s Marvel. No matter what, he will be trying his hardest.”

CALL ME BLUEY: Race 9, Box 2, 1.11pm
Angela says: “I’m glad that Call Me Bluey has got a near inside draw, but this is a very competitive field.”

Angela reflected on her former champion female sprinter It’s All Talk, who retired in 2018 after 32 wins from 55 starts and amassing $88,000 in prize money.

“It’s All Talk was versatile distance wise, with her wins ranging from 300m – 500m, and she really did love Healesville.”

“She was a very dynamic greyhound and the first great dog we ever had. She brought our family a lot of joy… she really was magnificent.”

“She took us to a different level. For us as hobby trainers to be able to match it with the bigger kennels, in group events and a higher grade of race, was such a huge thrill, and the whole litter that she belonged to gave us so many happy times.”

“We had the litter since they were puppies, and sometimes when I saw them on the track, it brought tears to my eyes thinking about how far they had come along. My family and I had been a part of their development all the way through.”

It’s All Talk was a finalist in the G2 Laurels at Sandown Park, and won a Vic Breeders Maiden Final, a Puppy Championship, and the Queens of Healesville series on two occasions.
