We’re just days away from the Group 1 Maturity Classic heats and I can’t wait.
A few weeks ago, I wrote that this might be the best crop of young greyhounds we’ve seen in years. It sparked a fair bit of debate, but I’m still standing by it.
Recency bias? I don’t think so. I think we’re just lucky enough to be watching an unbelievable generation.
Here are the Victorian greyhounds I want to see lining up.
Wrongly Accused (formerly Organised Crime)
The Horsham Cup winner has had a name change, but nothing else has changed. He is still an absolute jet. Seventh-fastest ever around The Meadows last Wednesday night after demolishing a quality Horsham Cup field the start before. If you’re not excited by this dog, I don’t know what to tell you. Spare a thought for race caller James Van de Maat getting used to the new name!
Dewana Sizzle
When I visited the Dewan kennel, Matt quietly pointed out a youngster and simply said I’d know his name soon enough. He wasn’t wrong. Dewana Sizzle announced himself with a best-of-the-night 25.77 at Warragul before backing it up with a brilliant 29.38 win at Sandown with his run home being the best part of it. The hype is real.
Off The Chart
Does anyone else feel like Off The Chart has been around forever? Somehow, he still qualifies for the Maturity. Between Country Cup wins and a Golden Easter Egg triumph, he’s continued to produce at The Meadows, including a slick 29.71 victory last month. You simply have to include him.
Dramatical
Australian Cup winner. Warragul Cup winner. 29.57 personal best over the Maturity trip. Dramatical feels like he’s been part of the furniture for years, and I’m more than happy for that to continue.
Dustin
If there was a prize for best-looking greyhound, Dustin wins comfortably. Fortunately, he can run too. Runner-up in the Horsham Cup behind Wrongly Accused (Organised Crime) and the owner of a 29.66 PB at The Meadows, he’s the complete package.
Canya Excite Me
A Sandgroper winner against an elite, hand-picked field, Canya Excite Me has serious early speed. It feels like only a matter of time before she lands a major in Victoria.
Blink And Miss
Josh Formosa has plenty of exciting youngsters, but Blink And Miss is the one I’ve got my eye on. Four wins from his first five starts, and I’m happy to forgive his latest sixth at The Meadows. His 29.72 win there the week before, along with his Pink Diamond Maiden series performances, showed exactly how much ability he has.
Paw Damon
Paw Damon is an absolute jet. The only thing holding him back is his box manners. He’s an excitement machine, and who doesn’t love an underdog with the talent to shake up a Group 1?
There are plenty of others that could have made this list, and the reality is we might not even see all of these stars in the Maturity heats.
The fields are released on Wednesday afternoon, so keep an eye on the Watchdog App.
Saturday night’s heats are going to be an absolute cracker.
