It was a faultless performance from Paw Matic which delivered the Grenfell family another Sportsbet Geelong Cup at the Beckley Centre tonight.
In what was built as one of the most even editions of the race in recent memory, late betting support was in Paw Matic’s direction. As she did in her heat the week prior, she began faultlessly and went to the lead. While there was initial pressure from Tripped Out, Paw Matic quickly got away mid-race. The first reserve Simply Stunning looked to be a threat as they were turning for home, but the strength and tenacity of Paw Matic came to the fore.
It was her 19th career start and her 10th win – an outstanding record for a young greyhound who promises plenty in 2026.
“She’s the best bitch we’ve ever trained,” said Correy Grenfell post-race.
“She has a lot of ability and a bright future. We don’t have immediate plans for her.”
It’s the second Sportsbet Geelong Cup that the Grenfell family has won, after Yozo Bale delivered their first in 2022. A triumph that would have more sentimental value than most, given the family are locals from Anakie.
Both of their Geelong Cup winners are bred and owned by the Wheeler family, who have been significant supporters of Correy and Sam Grenfell.
The Victorian Country Cup circuit now turns its attention to Warrnambool, which runs alongside the famous thoroughbred carnival at ‘The Bool’. The Sportsbet Warrnambool Cup will be run on Wednesday May 6.
