We look forward to a stock standard meeting at Sandown Park tonight while the eyes of the greyhound world are locked on Cannington (WA) for the $300,000 Sandgroper.
Five Victorians (Canya Mayhem, Distinction, Canya Excite Me, Deadly Avenger and Mepunga Reward) take part in the Sandgroper, which is Race 5 at Cannington at 9.14pm (Victorian time) with Phoenix winner Deadly Avenger looking to go back-to-back in WA’s richest greyhound race.
For what it’s worth, I’ll tip Deadly Avenger at the double figure quote, it looks like he’ll get room to move and by the sounds of it should perform better than he did last start in the Easter Gift.
BEST AT SANDOWN PARK
Race 2, Indy Melmen (3)
This greyhound has only had four starts and it’s already clear that he can run like the wind. He’s the strongest and fastest greyhound in this field. He lacks a little bit of early speed but I’m not phased by that given the opposition. He’s opened at almost even money and that’s more generous than I thought we’d see.
NEXT BEST
Race 1, Stream It (2)
I rarely get around greyhounds that are green, he still is, however I feel he’s handy. His good turn-of-foot has been evident and I don’t see a reason why he can’t show that in this. We don’t have a clear view on his strength yet, but hopefully that early speed is enough to hold on.
BEST VALUE
Race 4, Baby Girl Pearl (4)
It’s not the deepest race of all time but it presents an opportunity for her. She’s been showing decent early speed, if she can use that she’ll be in a good place. Despite being beaten, her run home time of 10.52 last week would be enough to hold on to at least a place if she’s up front.
WORTH THE RISK/TAKE ON
Race 11, Canya Terry (1)
If Hurricane (3) gets clear, which it looks like he should, Canya Terry is simply not fast enough to win the race. Hurricane is not a betting proposition given his odds but should win, which means at the morning’s quote of $2.80 Terry is a lay.
