Master move paid off | Deadly Avenger wins Phoenix

Deadly Avenger delivered Jason Thompson his second victory in the $1.65 million Phoenix, storming home to claim the world’s richest greyhound race for slot holders David Bourke Constructions.

Having been transferred into Thompson’s care just days out from the series, Deadly Avenger justified every ounce of faith placed in him, producing a powerful late surge to overhaul early leader Eriza Sparkles in a thrilling finish.

The win capped a remarkable story that began when respected trainer Joe Borg agreed to lend the collar and lead of Deadly Avenger – a decision that sent shockwaves through the sport and sparked endless debate in the build-up to Phoenix night.

From box six, Deadly Avenger found early trouble, enduring a couple of checks as the field charged into the first turn. But once balanced, the powerhouse chaser began to unwind in trademark fashion.

In a post-race moment that reflected the magnitude of the achievement, Thompson was quick to deflect the praise.

While Deadly Avenger claimed the headlines, Melbourne Cup winner Canya Mayhem was enormous in defeat, charging home to finish second after another brave performance at the elite level.

Accredited completed the placings, capping a high-quality edition of the Phoenix that showcased the very best of the sport.

For Thompson and David Bourke Constructions, it was a calculated gamble that paid off – a master move executed to perfection on racing’s biggest stage.

And for Deadly Avenger, it was the crowning moment of a career that will forever be etched into Phoenix folklore.
